인천국제공항공사(사장 이학재)는 “5월18일 인천공항 제1여객터미널 탑승게이트에서 캐나다 2대 항공사 웨스트젯(WestJet)의 신규 취항을 기념하는 행사를 가졌다”고 20일 밝혔다.

이날 행사에 웨스트젯 채리티 웨딘(Charity Wedin) 지역 국제공항담당 임원, APG 코리아 춘킷 웡(Chunkit Wong) 대표, 이수태 인천공항공사 항공마케팅팀장 등 관계자들이 참석했다.

신규 취항한 인천-캘거리 정규편 노선은 밴쿠버, 토론토에 이은 세번째 캐나다 직항 정기노선이다.

특히 캘거리가 위치한 캐나다 알버타주에는 여행객들의 이목을 사로잡는 에드먼튼(Edmonton), 밴프(Banff) 국립공원 등 다양한 관광지가 위치하면서 신규 취항이 여객수요를 촉진시킬 것으로 공사는 예상되고 있다.

웨스트젯은 2023년 운항을 시작한 일본 도쿄에 이어 인천을 두번째 아시아 취항지로 결정했다.

도쿄 노선이 지난해 주 3회 운항 뒤 금년 4월부터는 주 7회로 증편했던 만큼 인천 노선 또한 금년도 운항실적에 따라 확대될 것으로 기대된다.

현재 인천과 캘거리 사이는 2023년 기준 약 2만4천명의 여객들이 밴쿠버 등 중간 경유를 통해 오가는 것으로 집계된 가운데 웨스트젯은 대한항공과 공동운항(Code-share)을 통해 양국 뿐 아니라 아시아 지역의 잠재수요 확보에 박차를 가할 것으로 보인다.

이 노선은 320석의 보잉787-9 드림라이너가 투입될 예정이고 인천에서 캘거리까지 운항시간은 10시간20분이 소요된다.

공사는 새로운 취항지를 알리기 위해 캘거리 공항측과 상호 공항내 디지털 디스플레이 홍보를 진행할 계획이며, 신규 항공사 웨스트젯의 안정적인 운영 정착을 위한 마케팅 인센티브도 지급할 계획이다.

웨스트젯 그룹 부사장 겸 최고상업책임자 존 웨더릴(John Weatherill)은 “캐나다와 한국의 수십년간 상호협력과 교역의 역사가 웨스트젯 한국 노선 취항의 발판이 됐다. 앞으로 양국간 문화적 교류와 경제적 유대를 강화하는 이정표가 될 것이다”고 말했다.

이에 이학재 사장은 “캐나다를 향한 새로운 하늘길을 열게 돼 매우 기쁘게 생각한다” 며 “신규 취항이 안정적으로 운영될 수 있도록 항공사 등과 협력, 항공수요를 안정적으로 증진시켜 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

WestJet has decided to make Incheon its second Asian destination after Tokyo, Japan, which began operations in 2023.

The Incheon route is also expected to expand according to this year's operation performance, as the Tokyo route was increased to seven times a week from April this year after operating three times a week last year.

Currently, about 24,000 passengers are expected to travel between Incheon and Calgary through intermediate stops such as Vancouver in 2023, and WestJet is expected to accelerate its efforts to secure potential demand not only in the two countries but also in Asia through code-sharing with Korean Air.

The route will involve 320 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and takes 10 hours and 20 minutes from Incheon to Calgary.

To announce the new destination, the corporation plans to promote digital displays in the airport with Calgary Airport, as well as marketing incentives for the stable operation of new airline WestJet.

John Weatherill, vice president and chief commercial officer of WestJet Group, said, "The decades-long history of mutual cooperation and trade between Canada and Korea has been the stepping stone to launch WestJet routes to Korea. It will be a milestone for strengthening cultural exchange and economic ties between the two countries."

In response, President Lee Hak-jae said, "We are very happy to open a new skyway for Canada," and added, "We will cooperate with airlines and increase aviation demand stably so that new services can operate stably."
